Native to South Africa, this plant can be seen in massive sweeps on the hillsides in the wild there. Through the years, breeders have developed many variegated leaf forms and flower colors. These are mostly bright orange-red trumpet-like flowers at the terminus of a 12-18" stalk, but now yellow and cream-white flowers can be found in a number of specialty catalogs and web sites. This species is evergreen in zones 9-10, but one must grow it as a container plant in colder areas, and it is well worth the effort. As a container subject, it does quite satisfactory in a root-bound state for years and flowers just as well. Give it filtered sun to help build up the plant for the next year's flowers. I would also give it a liquid fertilizer about once a month during the warmer months, and would also recommend a tablespoon or two of dolomitic lime once a year as well. These plants that we are offering were all named cultivars, but they have been mixed up, so we are not selling them as such. They are all flowering size plants and are various shades of orange.
